W3 has provided 140 standard named colors. People tend to see three kinds of color. Hue we see in the rainbows of colors that are of a similar saturation and light range. light we see as a colorful or luminous white-to-black scale. shade is similar to light, yet subdued in the gentle overlay of shade. Hue, light and shade define our color experience.

Named colors, or simply nc are an amazing innovation. But first the why-and-how background of our color design.

Tools

Color Picker   Why "tools"? W3Schools’ Color Picker tool visually explains hue by examining one color at a time. Color Picker features a Lighter/Darker scale based on the total luminosity or TL of a specific color, followed by Hue, followed by Lightness. Each color lightness (R+G+B=TL, expressed as deg) may or may not appear as ‘brighter’ depending on existing individual color blindness (we are all measurably color blind). However, this 'light' scale is graded in 20 5% steps between 0 and 100%. nc values seldom match W3Shools stepping: that is, each color TL seldom is an exact integer of 5 or 10. For example, in the Color Picker the nc "Pink" is 88%, between but not on any of the 20 lighter 100% to darker deg Color Picker steps.x

So counting balanced 5% or 10% steps we cannot include pink as part of even increments in the Color Picker. Pink is displayed as an offset between 85% and 90%. Offset does not occur for nc colors with hex pairs (e.g., red 50% is #ff0000 with 3 hex pairs - see below, why 8). Pairing hex colors always fall exactly in a '5' or '10' increment! The implications of light have engaged science for millennia and are not fully understood. We provide light values as a lighter-to-darker palette, with hex values. The lightness ranges from deg for black to 100% for white.

Why "hue"? W3Schools decided to guide students to pick colors while respecting the luminous intensity of each color by matching that intensity to a rainbow of colors. The rainbow colors that display hue are red-yellow-green-cyan-blue-magenta-red: 6 base colors in twenty shade-steps, so that 20 colors meld into each other in 20 evenly spaced Color Picker hues. The brightness of each hue rainbow matches the lightness of the color examined by the Color Picker (TL). So the yellow Hue rainbow is brighter than the blue Hue rainbow. Each rainbow uses the TL deg increments 0-15-30-45-60-75-90-105-120-135-150-165-180-195-210-225-240-255-270-285-300-315-330-345-360. The hue angle (also known as color stop) ranges from 0 to 360 degrees.

Shading

Why shade? Light scales and shade scales both display darkness around any particular color. KunRuch Creations provides the perfect tool to display a fully luminous gradient or color depth in a light-dark scale. White saturation on left melds into black saturation on the right, gets deployed in a shade scale: MDiGi Color Shades Generator, that is similar to W3’s Color Picker Saturation scale, except that the later only offers midrange grey saturation. All that being appreciated, the shade scale looks almost identical to the light scale. We chose light over shade, to display and compare appearance for all nc.

Why 8 samples in each color scale? HTML color is most often coded as a hexadecimal value.

hex·a·dec·i·mal relating to or using a system of numerical notation that has 16 rather than 10 as its base: a string of hexadecimal characters, abbreviated and spoken as "hex"

Hex color commonly uses 6 digits: #rrggbb. Color Picker uses hex to scale 20 Lighter/Darker shades from deg to 100% for each nc and and scales 24 hex hues from 0ᴼ to 360ᴼ for each nc. From the Color Picker, we take 8 of the Lighter/Darker values (15% 25% 35% 45% 55% 65% 75% 85%) and 8 hues (0ᴼ 45ᴼ 90ᴼ 135ᴼ 180ᴼ 225ᴼ 270ᴼ 315ᴼ). 8 shades and 8 hues for each nc.

Color hexadecimal values are the most popular code format. 16 character-values 0-1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-a-b-c-d-e-f create web hex color in the CSS format color: #123abc01;. 6 alphanumeric characters 123abc describe color rrggbb. 2 following numeric characters (if present) 01-99 describe transparency.

Like rgb color, hex color uses red-green-blue mix. Hex alphanumeric value rrggbb is base-16. So, hex is more compact than rgb, because base 16 or 16-bit hex has 6 more digits than the base-10 or 10-bit rgb. Where rgb requires 18 characters and spaces rgb(rrr, ggg, bbb), hex only needs a hash # and 6 characters #rrggbb to describe the same color!

For example, pink is hex #ffc0cb, or rgb(255, 192, 203). The TL for Pink is 650. Color rgb is useful for calculating total luminosity, by adding rrr+ggg+bbb=TL. TL helps us to sort nc color groups. In each color group, nc are arranged from highest TL to lowest TL. That is, from brightest to darkest color.

TL ignores human color blindness!

Web color combines math and science beautifully, just as eight samples respect both global popularity and natural numeric balance of the hex code around light and hue. Hex color is interesting, easy to use and popular.

Appearance
How?

On this page, a collection of all 140 nc link between simple color group blocks of each nc and light/hue samples for each nc below those simple blockss.

Schools teach lots about colors. So each color‘s breakouts may promise far more extension than we have space for here. We simply show color samples with code clips to copy and reproduce demonstrated color samples. We keep all 140 named color data on just one page.

Each named color features in 2 parts, Names and Kinds. Names features each nc in a single floating color data block: e.g., Pink block floats left of similarly floating LightPink Name block. Kinds features each nc in a stacked table block with light and hue resource. W3Schools resource HTML Table Colspan & Rowspan defines our simple table construction, for those who want to build something similar.

W3 Schools opens shades, mix and many other color resources on many pages. Here we deploy Names and Kinds using friendly fonts Comic Mono (a free Github resource) and Comic Neue (a free Google resource). Many thanks to all, in those two domains.

We use color cube samples. Named Colors are sorted using 2 methods online, the luminescent method and the equipolent method. The css user-select attribute or ‘usa’ makes it easy to select and copy color values here.

Many resources are deployed here, not limited to the following.

  1. Standard Color Groups, Color Picker (luminescent), Color Mixer (equipolent), Web Safe Color and Color Converter are a few of many useful tools at W3 Schools, where we all need to humble and learn. Because that’s where current public web Standards live.
  2. Luminescent method (mdigi.tools) inserts each named color cube acording to that color’s vibrant luminance in the Light-to-Dark flow.
  3. Equipolent method (maketintsandshades.com) evaluates each named color cube between lighter-and-darker cubes. Equipolence shades named colors with strictly white and grey bias.

We launched our web color project into the wider artistic appeal of Luminesence. W3 adoption of named colors develops wonderful luminance in its colorful lighting of hue in the White Colors group. Word Perfect is an example of a publishing platform that for decades has championed equipolent web design. In the global color industry, graphic interests tend to favour luminance, while architecture interests stronly sanction equipolence. Color version 3 is an active ©Riverleaf™ project from 2000 January - 2023 March.

Worrying? Trend would be a flood of attempts to unofficially ‘standardize’ any mass of ‘all’ .com/.edu/.etc colornames to extend the existing mono-like-twin-trip-fuse W3Schools color wheel agreement (SaaSHub by macOS Sierra, still at work documenting yet another inclusion)? Promising over 10,000 new universal color names, maybe through Google or Wikipedia. W3Schools extension of its HTML Color Picker page in 2023 indicates gathering momentum. That would radically alter this nc page.

Now, there is no online tool to process the specific 140 named colors. W3 has provided five (5) color wheels with each wheel processing 36 un-named colors. There is no nc wheel, though subsequent to paying tuition, W3 Schools informed me they might share that 140 color wheel, eventually! Adobe will provide some color wheel tool at cost, but the App Store will also flood!

Unfortunately, aside from the nc 140, every school and corporation has its own named colors, with all of those so-called "Owned & Copyright" but identical named hues seriously competing with each identical ‘other’. Dead water, stuck in the mud. Discovered by a digitally vastly superior Alien race the humans had to color something! But managed only half a broken syllable...

A riverleaf versioning? None of the available free and commercial color tools can be related to Named Colors, that perhaps need a balanced clean up! See below, we use #66b032, found at the bottom of the 5 disconnected W3Schools.com 36-hue color wheels. Does 36 foreshadow html6/css4 extension to 36 colors in each named color group, finally some nc balance?

If only those wheels were optionally sized appropriately with the 140 Named Colors? W3 could proudly brandish the 140 nc monochromatic, analogous, complementary, tridic and compound templates for all to share and learn from. Unlike the consistent Adobe wheel, the Named colors with 5 pinks and 18 greens, etcetera are numerically unbalanced. The nc wheel would not look geometrically and tonally balanced like all those other color wheels. Does human color blindness seem similar to our global nc landscape? Yup.

Outlook? Perhaps in its next rendition, nc will carry exactly 36 color names in each of its existing eleven (11) Color Groups.

SVG was intended to provide support (still waiting) with color scheme inheritance. MDN is developing prefers-color-scheme for an eventual CSS Named Colors alternative and supplement to SVG and iframe. There is a solid science and math framework being actively developed.

Build that W3 color wheel for 140?
360 degrees / 140 = 2.571428571428571428... degrees repeating. So our 140 nc sections of the 360 wheel are each 2.571428 degrees. This bakes a good pie, using Google Colors. This seems to be as adhoc as the nc’s youtube history (A B C)... query1 query2 answer 1 answer 2.

Yes, we are all color blind. Because we are human beings, the color samples on this page do not show any of us consistently even transitions from light to dark. Irregularities appear everywhere. Yet with mathematical precision the color bands on this page are arranged from lighter to darker, consistently in each color group and in each color band we can consistently share expected unique color experiences.

Message to Colblindor.com 230422: At DDIAE in Toowoomba, Australia Doctors Beirnoff and Wood were quite explicit for a semester, teaching that all people are color blind. Ishahara demonstrates this fact. You manage to avoid confirming this global CVD reality on the Colblindor site. At DDIAE, I was doing a Behavioral Science/Education double major. So what fascinates me about our universal deficiency is the manner in which children learn to be color normal in the first years of life. Why do some of us self-select to claim exceptional CVD? Scientists are learning how to transplant Praying Mantis visual receptors. Dear, Pentagon interest! Please update.

Even more interesting, none of us are color blind the same way. None of us see the same color irregularity in our unique color perceptions! Human color blindness reflects color bias. Greens tend to display the most irregularity for 74% of us (though we all see 'green' traffic lights). Reds most significantly impact 32% of people ('red' Stop signs, understood by all). While blue color blindness can be predominant for only 17% of individuals. Significance, sensitivity and distress may seem harsh color convictions, yet color blindness enriches our human communities with uncontested cultural strength, accomodation and innovation. In many ways, color is central to compassion, empathy and understanding.

How can we be this way without more concern? We learn colors like we learn language. With great attention to detail. We learn and share our “favorite colors”. This document demonstrates css font and color styling and research. Colorband demonstrates that using css transform property with values (-1,-1) to scale h1-h2, h3-h4, h5-h6 (flipping text upside-down) consistently disrupts content flow. The only reliable solution would be typographic: a font created to display upside-down, which does not exist. Transform is strictly intended for reversing l-r and r-l writing on a horizontal line. There is no css method to safely flip text upside down or at any angle. Though transforms can tilt or flip text, such usage is extremly rare. Think of color as an extreme opposite, our life consuming global infatuation.
